As the clocks change and the evenings draw in, there’s a particular kind of pub that comes into its own: one with a proper fire, a good drink and somewhere comfortable to sit once the light has gone. The Three Horseshoes Inn, in Lickfold, is exactly that kind of pub – tucked away in West Sussex between Petworth and Midhurst – we may be biased but we truly do believe that autumn is when our pub is at it’s best.

A proper fire for proper autumn evenings

There’s something about a real fire that no amount of clever heating can replace. At the Three Horseshoes Inn, in Lickfold, the fire is as much a part of the pub as the beams and the flagstones. On a cold evening it’s the natural place to end up, whether that’s with a pint at the bar or settled in for dinner. It’s the kind of spot that makes people linger a little longer than they planned to, which is exactly as it should be.

Good food to match the season

Our kitchen follows the seasons rather than fighting them, so as autumn arrives the menu shifts with it: heartier dishes, warming flavours and the kind of comfort food that suits a dark evening. Sunday lunch remains a firm favourite all year round because nothing beats a proper roast with seasonal vegetables and all the trimmings but, autumn is when it feels most appropriate, especially after a walk in the surrounding countryside.

Perfect after a walk in the Sussex countryside

Lickfold sits right in the middle of some of the best walking country in West Sussex, within easy reach of the South Downs and the Cowdray Estate near Midhurst. Whether you’ve spent the afternoon exploring the estate, following a footpath through the fields or simply need a reason to get outside before the weather closes in, The Three Horseshoes Inn is a natural place to finish up. Dogs are genuinely welcome here, not just tolerated, with water bowls and treats on hand, so muddy paws are never a problem.

A pub for good conversation and long evenings

Beyond the food, the bar at the Three Horseshoes Inn is built for the kind of evening where nobody’s in a rush. Cosy corners, a good wine list, well-kept ales and a fire to sit near make it an easy place to spend a couple of hours with friends, family or a good book – our bar is also open 7 days a week, making it the perfect place to rely on when the weather is changing and pub gardens are closing.
